Description
Open Pollination (O.P.) seeds from Hosta Gunther’s Prize. This tricked-out Hosta is so eye-catching, but apparently, the seed is hard to come by and what you get out of that seed is almost anyone’s guess! Typically, the bulk of seedlings are reportedly greens, and culling rates are therefore high.
That said, splashed-type seedlings that resemble the parental coloration have been documented on multiple occasions (Join the Growers of Hosta Seeds Facebook group, and then visit that link), but they are not commonplace. Anna Namyslak shared another example of a “marbled” F1 Gunther’s Prize hosta seedling in early 2022. In mid-2022, another seed grower revealed two stunning seedlings, reportedly the results of approximately 40 seeds, resulting in 8 seedlings and 3 keepers. They’re amazing! Even a curious blue-gray seedling has shown up in Guther’s Prize progeny.
Ultimately, you’re taking a relatively high-stakes gamble, but the payoff could be immense.
Seeds were very limited in the 2020 harvest (15 packs), and scant in 2021 to the point where we had to auction them. We’ve planted more Gunther’s Prize to hopefully get more seeds, but it is never very productive!
I consider this to be a “green gold” hosta, as both colors are present. See more at the Hosta Helper and the Hosta Library.
