2024 SEEDS NOW ON SALE!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you all! Historically, most seeds are harvested in October, after which we clean, count, and pack them for the season. Seed sales normally start sometime in late December to early January! We did NOT harvest every last hosta seed this season; we mainly focused on retaining the streaker seeds. For the 2024 harvest, initially, many high-demand seeds will be limited to just 1 per customer to allow more growers the opportunity to get something special!

Locally, we are again planning to hold three garden sales during 2025 where you’ll be able to browse a wide range of hostas, daylilies, and other northern hardy perennials, along with a few houseplants I always take the time to bring out as well! June, July, and August, dates are TBD at this time!

A 2024 Harvest Recap

Hosta seeds were harvested during just two main days this October. Extreme-drought plagued us for a fourth (!!!) summer in a row, and production was again lower than historical numbers. For example, a few years back, Chirifu Oba produced 6 scapes. In 2021, it was 5, but in 2022, we only had 2 scapes. In 2023, Chirifu Oba was down to just 1 scape. In 2024, after a dig and reset, it didn’t even bother to bloom! 2025 will see us doing prophylactic watering. No more trusting in summer rains to get the job done!

Our daylily seed production, which happens earlier in the season, was 50% of 2023’s harvest. This is, in part, due to missing over a week of hybridizing during the peak bloom season and also cutting back on the number of diploid crosses we produced (we always wind up with leftovers, it seems). Still, we have over 800 packets of seed for sale at this time. Since no one seems interested in buying seeds directly from our website (no sales through that channel after 2 years of trying), you will find the full selection and best prices on our Daylily.com auction!
