Description
Open Pollination (O.P.) seeds from Hosta Hida No Hana. I obtained this plant-based on the reliability and prodigious nature of the closely related Chirifu Oba, both of these streakers basically a streaked varieties of Hosta Montana. If Hida No Hana seeds prove comparable to Chirifu Oba’s seeds, then I think these will be highly enjoyable seeds to work with. While Chirifu Oba is decidedly a mix of gold and green, Hida No Hana seems to incorporate more white into the streaking and misting pattern. I suspect you’ll see comparable influence on the offspring.
A quick check on the “Growers of Hosta Seed” group on Facebook shows many interesting streaked and misted offspring, although one hybridizer notes that the seedlings themselves may be more difficult to work with, having less than ideal vigor. Of course, that could depend entirely on the pollen that went into it.
See more at Hosta Helper and the Hosta Library. (please forgive the slug damage on the 2021 photos of this still young plant…I’ll be putting extra slug bait all around in in 2022!)
